Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Abergele: What Is It and Is It Right for You?

If you've heard about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and wondered whether it's something you could actually do, this guide is for you. BJJ has grown massively in popularity over the last decade, and for good reason. It's one of the most practical, effective self-defence disciplines in the world, and you don't need to be fit, strong, or experienced to get started.

At PMA Martial Arts Abergele, we offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for adults and teens in Abergele. Here's everything you need to know before you take that first step.

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a ground-based martial art that focuses on controlling, restraining, and submitting an opponent using technique rather than strength. Unlike striking arts such as boxing or kickboxing, BJJ takes the fight to the ground—where most real-world confrontations end up.

The core principle of BJJ is that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker by using leverage, body positioning, and technique. That makes it one of the most empowering martial arts you can learn, regardless of your size or fitness level.

BJJ for Self-Defence — Not Just Sport

There are two sides to BJJ: the sport/competition side, and the self-defence side. At PMA Martial Arts Abergele, our focus is entirely on practical self-defence.

Our curriculum covers over 100 real-world techniques across a structured 28-lesson system—designed to give you genuine skills you can rely on. You won't be training for trophies. You'll be training for confidence, awareness, and the ability to protect yourself and the people you love.

Lead instructor Jack Jourdain holds a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under Royce Gracie—one of the most respected names in the history of martial arts—and brings that depth of knowledge to every class in Abergele.

Who Is BJJ For?

One of the best things about BJJ is how accessible it is. You do not need to be:

  • Super fit
  • Strong or athletic
  • Young
  • Experienced in any other martial art

BJJ is genuinely for everyone. Our classes in Abergele include complete beginners alongside more experienced students, and we make sure everyone trains safely and progressively. If you can show up and put the effort in, BJJ will work for you.

What Happens in a BJJ Class at PMA Abergele?

Here's a typical class at PMA Martial Arts Abergele:

Warm-Up — Light movement, stretching, and specific BJJ drills to get your body ready and start building muscle memory.

Technique Session — Your instructor demonstrates a technique or sequence. You'll drill it with a partner, focusing on correct form and understanding the "why" behind each movement.

Positional Sparring (Rolling) — As you progress, you'll practise applying techniques in controlled, live situations with your partner. This is where everything starts to click.

Classes run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at 28A Market Street, Abergele, Conwy, LL22 7AA.

Belt Progression

BJJ uses a five-belt system: White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black.

At PMA Abergele, belt assessments take place every three months. To be eligible, you need to have attended at least 20 classes. There's no written test—progression is based on your attendance, technique, and readiness as assessed by your instructor.

Most students reach blue belt within 18–24 months of consistent training. It's a genuine achievement that reflects real skill—not just time served.
