Why Self Defence Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Different from Sport BJJ

When most people hear Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), they picture competitions, points, and athletes wearing colourful belts. While that's one side of BJJ, it's not what we focus on at PMA Abergele.

Our Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are built around one simple goal: helping ordinary people become more capable of protecting themselves and their families in real-life situations.


Self Defence Comes First

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was originally developed as a practical method of self-defence. It allows a smaller person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent using technique, leverage, positioning, and control rather than relying on strength alone.

Over the years, many clubs have shifted towards the sport side of BJJ, concentrating on competition rules, points, and tournament strategies.

While sport BJJ is an excellent discipline, our approach is different.

We train for situations that could happen outside the gym—not just on competition mats.

Our classes combine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with practical self-defence skills to prepare students for realistic scenarios.
